Help with financial terms
Annual interest rate
A yearly interest percentage. In a reducing-balance estimate, interest is charged on the amount still owed. Fees may be extra.
APR / annual cost measure
A yearly cost measure that includes interest and specified charges. Check the bank’s definition; it is different from the nominal interest rate.
Secured loan
An asset, such as a home or car, backs the loan. You may lose that asset if you do not repay as agreed.
Remaining principal
The original borrowed money you still owe, excluding future interest and any separate settlement fees.
Currency-conversion charge
An extra charge that may apply when a card payment is in a different currency. Check exchange rates and other fees too.
Estimate and missing costs
A calculation based on available information and your inputs. Unknown fees are not zero; the final cost may be higher.
