- Reporting: participating institutions supply credit information to MCIB. The bureau consolidates that information so lenders can assess overall borrowing and repayment behaviour, rather than only the account held with them.
- Lending decisions: your bank or card issuer assesses affordability and makes the approval decision. BoM does not approve each personal loan, set your card limit or promise you a particular interest rate.
- Interest rates: monetary policy influences borrowing conditions, but commercial lenders set their product rates. A variable-rate loan may change according to its contractual benchmark and reset rules; a policy-rate change does not mean every loan or card changes by the same amount immediately.
- Supervision: BoM oversees institutions within its remit. Being an MCIB participant does not mean every organisation is a bank or falls under the same regulatory arrangements. MCIB information is confidential and access is restricted; it is not a public list of borrowers.
The connection in one line
Your borrowing and repayments → information reported by participants to MCIB at BoM → a credit profile used by lenders alongside income and affordability checks → decisions on future credit. Responsible card use and manageable loan repayments therefore belong to the same financial plan.
