Purchase price and deposit optional

Purchase price is optional if you only know the loan amount. When you enter a price, a blank deposit counts as 0. The price must equal the loan amount plus your deposit.

Deposit (MUR)

Enter your income, existing debt payments and everyday costs. Empty debt and expense amounts count as 0. Total income must be above zero. Review your actual costs before using this budget check; it is not bank approval.

Dependable monthly take-home salary (MUR)

After tax and compulsory contributions, but before debt repayments. Add back repayments deducted from your payslip so they are counted only under debts.

Existing monthly debt repayments (MUR)

Total loans, leases, card repayments and other debts. Enter monthly payments, not balances. Enter 0 if none; exclude this proposed new loan.

Monthly living expenses (MUR)

Groceries, rent, utilities, transport, childcare, insurance and a monthly share of annual bills. Exclude debt payments already entered. Enter 0 only if genuinely none.

I’m taking this loan jointly with my partner or another person

Do not treat allowances, overtime or bonuses that could stop as guaranteed base salary. Check whether you could still pay without them, even if a lender counts them.

Your budget figures will be used once a loan repayment estimate is available.

Personal budget estimate, not approval or the bank’s legal DTI calculation. The 45%/50% warnings are take-home budgeting markers. Loan fees, rate rises and any final balloon payment need a separate allowance.

Job loss does not stop loan repayments, bills or the need to eat. Keep an emergency reserve that includes debts until income resumes; finding another job may take longer than expected.

Debt-to-income (DTI) is the share of your income used for all monthly debt repayments. A figure below 50% does not guarantee approval or mean a loan is affordable. Allow for essential spending and emergencies too. Banks also assess your circumstances and credit history, including information from the Mauritius Credit Information Bureau (MCIB).

Keep some savings available for essential bills if your income stops or an unexpected cost arises. Money left after repayments is not all spare cash: it still needs to cover living costs and your emergency reserve.
